Christchurch Earthquake: the good, the bad and the ugly

New Zealand is coming to terms with the devastating impact of the earthquake in Christchurch. Despite the terrible destruction caused, amazingly no one has been killed.
In room 9 we have been looking at the photos of broken buildings and reading newspaper articles that really show the best and worst of human nature.
Sadly, a few people have taken advantage of this terrible situation to steal and loot from shops. This is the ugly side of human nature: dishonesty.
On the Good Morning Breakfast show, a person e-mailed in to the show complaining about how much news coverage the earthquake was getting. This is the bad side of human nature:selfishness.
More encouragingly, was the Herald article on university students organizing work parties to help clean up Christchurch and in particular those who are old and incapable of helping themselves. Over 1300 students have registered on a Facebook site and are out on the streets helping. This is the good side human nature: selflessness.
Read the thoughts and comments of Room 9 students on the Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

  1. I think that people who think like that are stupid and looting is a crime because it is like stealing and it doesn’t belong to them. I think that the University students are cool by helping out the community and are not wasting their time because the University is shut down. What Really makes me mad is that people don’t care about what is happening to the other people, they would only care if it was themselves in trouble.

  2. I think that the fact that people are using this disaster as a chance to steal from shops is inhumane. People should be more worried about the safety of them and there family members, rather than how much free stuff they can get. I also believe that the person who emailed the Good Morning show complaining about this earthquake getting too much news coverage doesn’t care much for anybody else. People that have family members living in Christchurch use the news to see what’s happening and how safe their family members are. Without the news people wouldn’t know how much worse or better it’s getting in Christchurch and other small towns around Christchurch. I think the students that organised people to help with cleaning up properties that have been severely damaged are great. These people are a very good example of how people should act, even if they don’t do something as big as the clean up, most people can help in some way, like NOT looting or being there for somebody to talk to.

  3. I think that the people that have being looting are criminals and should be fined. All the students that have being going around helping all the people in Christchurch are awesome and that guy that sent the letter to Paul Henry is only thinking about himself. He should really be thinking about the rest of Christchurch and helping them out. I think the looters should be stopped because all the stuff they are stealing is not theirs.

  4. we think looting is bad because the people that are looting are just selfish and disrespectful the people should be trying to help out like the uni students are. The uni students are a great help and hopefully encourage people to get up off there bum. With this help Christchurch will become better and better.

  5. I think the looters are dishonest and should go to jail. The person who sent the email to good-morning about there being too much news on the earthquake is ignorant the people of Christchurch can use this information to be safer. The University students are a good example of using helping people instead of doing nothing.

  6. Thanks for these comments Arahia, Melanie and Karlie. I totally agree with what you are saying. I think it is particularly great to see the students taking such positive, problem solving action, in these days when people are quick to critisise youth!!! Go Students!
As for the looters, well I hope they are finding it difficult to sleep at night. What a terrible attitude to have and I feel quite sorry for them.

I also think that a really good thing that has come out of all this is the fact that NZ has really strong leadership. The Herald wrote an article earlier in the week about how a crisis will show us if a Prime Minister is a strong leader. I think John Key has led this country well over the last few days...and I didn't even vote for him... Well done Mr Key!

  7. I think that “The Good the Bad and the Ugly” is a very good way to describe the Christchurch earthquake. I dislike the people who were looting from the shops and taking them for advantage. I think that they will get classed as the Ugly. For the boy who created the face book page on helping clean up Christchurch, well he should get a metal or something like that. It is a very big responsibility to do something like that at that kind of age. They are defiantly classed as the Good. The lady who emailed the “good morning show” Was very rude and I don’t think that she had any family or friends in Christchurch, but I’m sure that if she did she would feel the same way if someone else had emailed them and said that. she would be classed as the bad.

  8. I think that the looting is very bad because of the stealing and all the hassle that is made. Why people don’t start to care and forgive others instead of stealing and starting a fight and starting a gang well this is a massage to all of those who think that they are all that well don’t and start to care

  10. I don’t think that people should go out and loot. Because they steal other peoples stuff and its against the law.

I think that those people that are looting should really take a good look at themselves and ask who they are to themself. This earthquake is a really big situation that's worth billions of dillars to fix buildings, homes, streets and more. The people that are taking part in the cleaning up are doing a real good job.
